Black History Month 2023 was celebrated by British Forces Brunei (BFB) on the 7th of November 2023. The event celebrated and recognised all people from African and Caribbean backgrounds. The national theme for 2023 is ‘Saluting our sisters’ and pays homage to celebrating the achievements of Black women within the Armed Forces. This has provided huge opportunities to learn and grow towards becoming a more diverse Defence community; reflects on the historic experiences and achievements that contributed to the social, political, economic, and cultural development and our shared history. Moreover, understanding what actions we can take to enact changes to make Defence more inclusive for all.
At the same time, the BFB D&I team conducted Diversity, Inclusion and Behaviour Day to provide understanding on services they offer to BFB service personnel and locally employed civilians on any D&I matters.
An opening address from BFB Commander Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Stanford-Tuck emphasised the importance of working in a diverse organisation with higher levels of teamwork and performing better for an optimal result. It is important to BFB more than ever today to work collectively as a team where everyone has a place, feels supported and respected to deliver BFB operational capabilities.
