On the 24th of June, as part of The Royal Gurkha Rifles 30th birthday celebrations (RGR30), a team of eight from B Company, The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) set out from Sir John Moore Barracks to complete a never done before challenge. The goal was to summit the highest peaks in the UK – Ben Nevis (1,345m), Scafell Pike (978m), and Snowdon (1,085m) – within 24 hours while carrying 15kg Dokos. The plan was to raise funds for the Khukuri Fund and promote the notorious Doko Race as part of the Gurkha selection process for the British Army. The Khukuri Fund is a new initiative aimed at providing support for urgent welfare cases within the Gurkha community and will be administered by the RGR Trust.
The team embarked on their challenge starting in Fort William, Scotland. They began their ascent of Ben Nevis on the 25th of at 1500hrs. Despite the challenging terrain, the team completed the summit in just 3hrs and 56mins, ahead of their planned schedule. The support from onlookers and well-wishers along the way boosted their morale and pride in their service to the British Army.
Next up was Scafell Pike, the toughest of the three peaks. Despite facing delays due to traffic and diversions, the team successfully conquered the mountain in 3hrs and 20mins, thanks to the motivation provided by the admin team.
The final challenge was Snowdon, which proved to be a test of endurance for the exhausted team. Despite facing physical challenges such as blisters and cramps, they pushed through and completed the summit in just 3hrs and 40mins, finishing the Three Peak Challenge in 23hrs and 50mins.
This unforgettable experience not only tested the team’s physical abilities but also strengthened their bond and taught them the importance of a positive mindset and self-motivation. The success of the charity event would not have been possible without the guidance of their Chain of Command, the dedication of the team members, and the support of generous donors.
