As the sun sets over the vast open desert in Jordan, a group of soldiers from diverse nations huddled around a campfire, sharing stories and strategies. This scene, a testament to the power of international overseas allied nation collaboration, is just one of the many benefits of an overseas exercise. We’re talking about Exercise EAGER LION 24. Prior to deploying to Jordan, we overcame the crucial pre-deployment phase where we packed and loaded all essential kit and equipment that is needed for this exercise. This phase is critical because the logistic team needs to ensure soldiers are well rested, fed, equipped, to be ready for action at any moment. While often overlooked, the logistic team are the unsung heroes of any exercise or operation. These individuals work tirelessly behind the scenes, often in challenging and dangerous conditions, to ensure that every aspect of the supply chain runs smoothly.

Once in Jordan, the overwhelming heat welcomed us, however amusingly, it gets really cold at night. Due to the weather, we had to do mandatory acclimatisation physical training before starting any activities or training.

Next phase was to integrate with 91st Battalion Quick Reaction Force (QRF) and Jordian Armed Force (JAF) prioritising low-level urban training. In this phase, each allied nation had their own stand teaching us how to use their equipment. The Italian forces greeted us at their land mine lane which was very impressive and well-rehearsed. They used TNT and PE-8 explosives with det cord to blast their explosives which was a spectacular sight. The next day, we went to counter UAS (drone) lane where the US forces explained and demonstrated us how to use their sophisticated equipment which disconnects the user from their drone. It was very innovative. The Jordanian forces showcased us their heavy weaponry by launching 35lb rounds from mortars which was placed inside their tanks. Our Company demonstrated urban warfare and taught our allied nations how to clear rooms and assault complex buildings. We also trained with the Italian Army, learning their standard operating procedure to infiltrate houses.

During our time in Jordan we also got chance to travel and visit key locations. Our group visited the capital city of Amman, Wadi Ram, the Dead Sea, and lastly, nestled in the rugged mountains Petra, an ancient city carved into rose-red cliffs that has captivated travellers for centuries. As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Petra offers a mesmerising glimpse into the artistry and will be forever remembered.

Not only were there allied nations in this exercise, but we had also attached units from the wider British Army. 4 Rangers, 7 Para Royal Horse Artillery, Medics as well as the most important members of the deployment, our chefs! They all played a vital role in this exercise for without them, this exercise would not have been so successful.
