On the 3rd of November 2024, over 150 runners participated in the Falklands Stone Run Half Marathon, a challenging 13.1-mile race, that brought athletes and enthusiasts alike to test their endurance and speed. The event, known for its scenic yet demanding course, saw competitors ranging from seasoned marathoners aiming for personal best times, to first timers with a goal of simply crossing the finish line.

Race organisers provided hydration stations and support throughout the course, helping runners navigate steep inclines and winding paths, all the time buffeted by strong headwinds. The finishers were cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd as they crossed the finish line in the Island’s capital, Stanley, with medals, cash prizes and a bottle of champagne awarded to winners.

While many runners dedicated months of training to this race, focusing on a mix of long runs, speed work, and hill training to prepare, D Company from The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) pull together a team with 24 hours notice. Ten of D Company’s fittest young personnel, and some senior Support Weapons (MG) Platoon personnel took part. In a strong display, 2 RGR’s Officer Commanding MG, Captain Blofeld secured first place with a time of 1 hour 24 minutes and MG Cadre Student Rifleman Rajan Limbu achieved third place. All of our team finished within the top 15, a sterling effort that emphasised 2 RGR’s commitment to the highest standards of fitness and determination.

We participated during Bhai Tika, part of RGR’s Tihar Celebrations. This meant we could celebrate a successful day in the best way possible, enjoying messing with the rest of D Company and sharing our memories of the challenge during a superb day of festivities.
